Through Our Eyes is an awesome project started by a friend of mine that is gaining national (and international) attention. They go to city and pass out 100 disposable cameras to homeless people who live there. These folks take the cameras and snap photos of their everyday lives: their living spaces, how they pass the time, and things that make them happy. All the pictures are displayed in a gallery, and visitors can vote for their favorites.
The participants receive a goodie bag and an offer of guidance whenever they need it, and the winners get a special prize. The real payoff is the awareness that Through Our Eyes creates among these communities, showing them that there are people in their own backyards that are in need of love and attention.
This shirt was produced as an add-on incentive to back the Through Our Eyes book project. One of the main phrases used in the TOE campaign is "The cameras are disposable. The people are not."
This is a fantastic way of saying that though the photographers are homeless, they are not to be thrown away or ignored. The shirt allows people to connect with that idea and show solidarity with the less fortunate people in their communities.
Labels like this one are placed next to each piece in the gallery, introducing the view to the photographer and telling a story about the photo.
This is a look at the physical book that was produced after the first few projects took place in cities across the South. If you'd like to snag a copy for yourself, visit www.throughoureyesproject.com
